옷도 니 몸에 맞는 게 편한 것추룩
테왁도 니 몸에 맞는 게 편하고 좋은 거여.
테왁은 해녀의 생명줄이자 쉼터이며, 이동과 운송을 담당하는 바다 위 탈 것이기도 하다. 이처럼 물질의 핵심 도구이기 때문에 그만큼 안전하고 쓰기 편해야 한다. 오래전부터 테왁은 본인이나 가족들이 직접 만들어 왔다. 그 때문에 테왁의 모양부터 매듭법, 테왁에 달고 다니는 물건들은 모두 해녀 마음에 따라 저마다 다양한 모습을 하고 있다.
테왁이 해녀에게 어떤 물건인지 여쭈어보면 미리 약속을 한 듯 어느 마을이든 같은 답을 들을 수 있었다. "테왁은 우리 목숨줄이지, 해녀 목숨줄." 언제든 깊은 물 밑으로 삼켜질 수 있는 광대한 바다 위에서, 해녀들은 테왁 하나에 몸을 의지하여 일하고 있다. "태풍만 불지 않으면 나갔다."라는 말처럼 상어가 다니는 물속을 죽기살기로 드나드는 것은 해녀에게 있어 당연한 일상이라는 사실에 경외심을 느낀다.
"이제 바당도 해녀도 곧 있으면 끝." 이라는 삼춘의 말에 테왁을 비롯한 해녀의 물건과 그 안에 담긴 이야기를 더 들여다보고 기록할 필요를 느낀다.
To the haenyeo, the Tewak is a lifeline, a place of rest, and a means of transport and movement on the water. Being such a critical tool for their work, it is essential that it be safe and easy to use. Since haenyeo and their families make their own Tewaks, everything from their appearance, to the knotting techniques used, and the items attached to the Tewak can vary, with new details to discover with each one observed.
Whenever I asked what the Tewak meant to the haenyeo in each village, the answer was always the same, as if they had all agreed upon in beforehand: "The Tewak is our lifeline, the haenyeo's lifeline." haenyeo rely on a single Tewak while diving in the vast ocean, which could swallow them up at any time. "I'll go out diving unless there's a typhoon coming in." The voices of the haenyeo who work in shark-infested waters reveal that they put their lives on the line every time they go out diving.
When the haenyeo said, "Soon, both the sea and the haenyeo will be gone." it emphasized the need to preserve the stories behind the haenyeo and their tools, including the Tewak, for future generations. We extend our gratitude to everyone who participated in this project.
